European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008 - in the UK
2008 has been designated as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
The official EC web page for the Year is now online: http://www.dialogue2008.eu/
EUCLID has been appointed as the official UK National Coordination Body [NCB] for EYID 2008. (EUCLID is already working as the UK Cultural Contact Point for the EU’s Culture Programme).
This year will see a wide array of activities and events under the theme of Intercultural Dialogue. However, more than this, the aim is to encourage dialogue around the extent to which people can be encouraged to think in new ways about intercultural issues. A key goal of the Year is to strengthen respect for cultural diversity and to acknowledge and respect different cultural identities and beliefs. Here in the UK, although there is no additional funding to support projects or initiatives, we are still excited about profiling what is arguably amongst the strongest examples in Europe of ways in which these issues have been and are being addressed.

Intercultural Dialogue. Is it just a slogan?
Caroline Boyle writes at European Commission- Europe in the UK Culture blog:
"Migration/emigration is the European story. It always has been but today takes on a new form. So, this is what the Single Market is all about? But it also creates two worlds as old and new alliances and ties collide. EU or non-EU? Temporary or permanent migrant?." Read more...
Space Unjust - Socio-Spatial Discrimination in Urban Public Space (135mb zipped PDF Document).
Featuring a number of case studies from Helsinki and Athens this study focussed on research concerning different urban cultures and state policies that shape the physical characteristics of the public domain, the public sphere, and the public space.
The aim of the dissertation was to develop a body of knowledge for sustainable public space design in our cities. It is often assumed that public space in the urban context is the common ground where people carry out shared functional and ritual activities, giving a sense of community. However appealing this may seem, in contemporary societies with an increasing awareness of diversity the term community, as well as citizenship and public space, are widely and rightfully challenged.
In view of this, the work addresses the hope for, and apprehension of, inclusive and diverse cities and emphasises that for social justice to stand a chance it is vital that our public spaces change to be more inclusive. Partner Search: Forensic Fashion (2mb PDF Document).
An opportunity to establish a link with other youth workers and/or educators that deal with the participation of young people between the ages of 14 – 17 who have an interest in fashion and the arts. We have started the process of searching for a partner group that delivers similar programmes to ours or if possible we might find a country that offers us the opportunity to showcase our work abroad. The programme is set out to equip its participants with the skills and knowledge to develop wearable art creations. It is also a space to generate and develop individual fashion identity in a safe environment where they will learn an array of transferable skills such as; Project planning, research, setting goals, negotiation skills, time management, decision-making, budgeting skills, team work, self awareness and confidence building.
Forensic Fashion is an awesome opportunity to meet other young people; hang out, get creative, be inspired, learn and laugh. Read more...
