Publications
USA
The following publications are available from NASAA (National Association of State Arts Agencies):
A State Arts Agency Strategic Planning Toolkit
A comprehensive, step-by-step guide to strategic planning. The toolkit helps cultural organizations respond strategically to a rapidly changing environment, and builds the planning skills of volunteer and professional cultural leaders. It identifies the hallmarks of excellence in planning and gives practical advice about planning's many challenges. Five detailed case studies reveal the results of good planning, as do several examples of innovative planning approaches from other sectors and self-evaluation checklists that any cultural organization can use. The toolkit is the third installment in NASAA's how-to series that includes the Performance Measurement Toolkit and Measuring Your Arts Economy. 2000; 76 pages.
Measuring Your Arts Economy: Twelve Questions and Answers about Economic Impact Studies
A practical guide that answers common questions about economic impact studies. The publication helps arts organizations plan their studies strategically, explains the basic concepts central to economic impact research, and offers advice for choosing good consultants or working partners. Measuring Your Arts Economy also pays special attention to effective communications strategies that arts organizations have used to promote their findings and spread good news about the arts. The document includes diverse perspectives on "best practices" from arts councils, legislators, researchers and advocates. 1997; 23 pages.
State Policy Briefs: States and the Creative Economy
States and the Creative Economy explores the policy rationales for arts and culture as an economic development strategy, outlines the roles state arts agencies can play in creative economy initiatives, and offers important success factors for state leaders.
A State Arts Agency Performance Measurement Toolkit
How can arts agencies demonstrate the impact of their activities? What evidence can they cite to demonstrate effective service delivery to the community, artists and arts organizations? How can public arts agencies respond to increasing government pressure to meet performance standards? This publication is a practical guide to help arts leaders and public agency officials create solutions to these challenging questions. NASAA's Performance Measurement Toolkit provides basic information on measurement fundamentals and outlines a step-by-step approach to developing a performance measurement system. Expert advice and procedural recommendations are offered, as are over 100 sample arts measures in use by state arts agencies. 1996; 61 pages.
Legislative Appropriations Annual Survey
An essential publication for anyone wanting to know about state governments' support of the arts, this report contains data on legislative appropriations to state arts agencies in all 56 states and jurisdictions. Tables and graphics highlight funding trends in an easy-to-understand manner.
State Arts Agency Public Funding Sourcebook

The section on trade missions features advice from leaders in the field with experience in this area. Commissioned and published by NASAA through a cooperative agreement with the National Endowment for the Arts. Written by Morrie Warshawski; 2000; 12 pages.
