2009 Conference Review
The 2009 conference focused on innovation, creativity and change in a glocalised world: new technologies; new audiences; new communities - a theme that has evolved from a report by Susan Elliott in MusicalAmerica.com and 2009 being the European Year of Creativity and Innovation in Education and Culture: Susan Elliott (MusicalAmerica.com January 21, 2009), reported on the meeting held between the Obama Transition team and key representatives of the arts sector. In her report, Elliott, notes the welcome given by the Obama team in the expressed views of the sector on the future role of the National Endowment for the Arts, and of government in general, in supporting the arts.
There was a unanimity of voice regarding the challenges facing the sector:
1. attracting new audiences
2. getting closer to communities
3. taking advantage of the new technologies
4. creating new models for business
5. greater institutional innovation
The European Year of Creativity and Innovation aims to raise awareness of the importance of creativity and innovation for personal, social and economic development; to disseminate good practices; to stimulate education and research, and to promote policy debate on related issues.
These two elements combined provided the perfect platform for this year’s STP&A conference.
